Kitchen extensions: why we build AND fit

28th February 2018

building kitchen extension

Many homeowners who plan a ground floor extension do so for one reason: they want a bigger kitchen. In many cases, they also want a larger entertainment space, of which the kitchen is part, without the old-fashioned divisions of dining room, lounge and kitchen. The idea is that it’s one integrated area that merges living space and kitchen space seamlessly together.

How many companies does it take?

The creation of a kitchen extension is often split between two companies, one to build the extension, and one to design and fit the kitchen. In an ideal world, these two companies work together towards a single date when everything is ready.

However, it’s more often like a relay, with the extension company handing over to the kitchen company once their part is complete. Even if they do co-operate and work alongside one another, a delay or problems on either side can cause timescales to be extended and costs to potentially rise.

One project, one company

At Silk Services, we’ve been on both sides; as builders and as kitchen designers and fitters. We’ve seen the frustrations for the trades and dusty disruption to the homeowners and their families, and thought, there has to be a better way.

And, of course, there is. One kitchen extension, and one company to do the whole job. Us. We’ve done is several times, and it works a treat. Here’s why.

• One point of contact

We plan the whole project from start to finish, so we are in charge of the timescales. We make sure everything happens on time and if there is an issue, we sort it out. So you, as the client, doesn’t have to constantly remember who is in charge of what part of the project in order to chase people up.

• Kitchen extension, not extension then kitchen

We ensure your extension plans match what you want from your dream kitchen. So many extensions are planned first to fit a budget, and then the kitchen made to fit inside that. Instead, we can help with an creative approach that plans both together, to give you both the space and the kitchen you want, right from the start.

• Your project, our teams

Our in-house teams of professional builders, carpenters, tradesmen and kitchen fitters work together all the time. They know and respect each other, so the job gets done without dramas or miscommunications. If there is an unexpected problem, they can call on other members of the Silk Services team to help resolve it quickly.

• An integrated build

For a homeowner like you, we know nothing is as frustrating as one set of workmen waiting on another to finish. Suddenly, everything comes to a halt, as the floor/walls/doors/windows don’t get done/delivered/fitted in time and your new kitchen is sitting in your garage gathering dust. At Silk Services, our team are onsite every day doing the jobs that need doing, and keeping your project on track. So, you won’t be left with a completed kitchen with no floor for weeks, or be waiting for the wiring to be done before the kitchen appliances can be fixed. (The only part we don’t have control over are the exact timing of visits and sign-offs by building control, etc.)

• Professional craftsmen at every stage

Our team are all highly skilled in their trades, so everything is done to the same high standard throughout. In some kitchen extensions we’ve seen, you can definitely ’see the join’ between two sets of tradespeople; the good ones and the sloppy ones. With Silk Services, you won’t see any difference – it’ll all be completed to the same exceptional standards, from the first brick laid to the final kitchen cabinet.

• Saves time and money

Since we do all the work, we can devote all the time and resources your project needs, when it needs it. This reduces timescales, as we don’t have to sub-contract to numerous other trades and wait on them to arrive. In addition, by using just one company, you don’t pay two sets of set-up fees or admin charges, which are usually added by each company to the price of a new building AND of your new kitchen.

Interested?

Call us at Silk Services to discuss your kitchen extension plans, and to book a site visit. We’ll come and hear your ideas, discuss your plans, look at the site, and help plan your kitchen. We’ll give you a quote for both your extension and your kitchen that’s both comprehensive and competitive.
